How does smoking adversely affect the skin?

It's common knowledge that smoking destroys lungs and causes cancer. It has long been suspected that smoking prematurely ages the skin.

Scientists have finally proven the aging effects produced from smoking. The most recent discovery is "Matrix Metalloproteinase." This is a newly discovered, collagen-destroying enzyme that increases when an individual smokes. Collagen supports the skin and prevents the skin from sagging and wrinkling. When collagen is depleted, the signs of aging become clear.

Smoking also causes vasoconstriction (narrowing) of blood vessels. This reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrition that the skin needs to look healthy and vibrant.
