Skin + Body Care

How can a man make daily shaving more comfortable?

After properly cleansing and toning the skin using the correct non-soap cleanser for your skin type, apply a gentle exfoliating agent using circular movements to the beard area only.

Remember that hot water should not be used for the face at any time. Warm water is the preferred temperature for the facial skin. Remove the exfoliator with warm water and keep the face moist for the next step.

Apply a crème-based shaving product to the skin that is hydrating, color free, fragrance free, and alcohol free. Avoid using irritating foams from aerosol cans or products containing numerous essential oils.

Begin with a fresh blade keeping the skin taunt with a finger from your opposite hand. Glide the blade evenly across the skin never allowing the blade to come in direct contact with a skin area that isn't protected by the shaving crème. Hair growth is heaviest above and below the mouth so begin with these areas while the blade is most sharp and fresh. After gliding the razor across the skin, place the blade under fresh running water to remove debris before swiping again.

Once the beard is finished, rinse with cool water to reduce any inflammation. Apply an after-shave product free of irritating alcohol, lanolin, fragrance, menthol, mint, or camphor. You may then apply your daily moisturizer -- not an active product containing AHA or Retin A -- to your entire face.
