What do antioxidants do?

Free radicals are harmful chemical products of body metabolism. They are formed after exposure to ultraviolet light, stress and environmental pollution (cigarette smoke, car exhaust, etc.). Free radicals are damaging to a wide range of body cells and are thought to cause certain cancers and diseases.

Antioxidants are the 'good guys' which protect cells and fight the free radicals. Beta-Carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium are antioxidants. Research strongly suggests that they help prevent cancers and other illnesses caused by free radicals.

Though still not absolutely proven, an antioxidant supplement seems to be a good wellness choice for many people.
